• Type 502 Blue Pigment for Concrete – Ultramarine Blue, 150 g

Type 502 is a high-quality powdered ultramarine blue pigment suitable for colouring cement, concrete, mortar and other compatible mineral compounds.

It is designed for decorative casting, art, design and concrete projects. The pigment can be used for colouring the entire mix, casting coloured figures, creating marble effects, applying coloured surface layers or preparing cement-based decorative paints. The manufacturer describes it as lightfast and compatible with cement-based systems.

Colour – Ultramarine Blue

Pigment designation: Ultramarine Blue Type 502.

It is worth noting that Type 502 generally produces a light to medium blue shade in white or pale concrete rather than a deep navy blue, even at relatively high dosage. The final colour is influenced by the colour of the cement, mix composition, pigment dosage, water content and surface finish.

Dosage

The manufacturer's maximum recommended dosage for concrete and cement-based mortar is:

up to 5% based on the weight of cement in the mix.

For example:

  • if 100 kg of concrete contains approximately 20 kg of cement;
  • 5% of 20 kg = 1 kg of pigment;
  • the maximum recommended pigment dosage would therefore be approximately 1 kg per 100 kg of this concrete mix.

The 5% recommendation refers to the cement content, not the total weight of the concrete.

Adding more pigment does not necessarily produce a stronger colour. Once colour saturation is reached, additional pigment provides little benefit, while significant overdosing may reduce concrete strength and cause surface chalking.

How to Use

For even colour distribution:

  1. Add the required amount of pigment to the dry compound first.
  2. Mix thoroughly until the pigment is evenly distributed.
  3. Add the specified amount of water and prepare the concrete or mortar as usual.

This method helps reduce pigment clumps and uneven colouring.

Suitable For

Type 502 can be used for:

  • decorative concrete;
  • casting concrete;
  • cement mortars;
  • compatible mineral plasters and grouts;
  • coloured concrete figures and decorative castings;
  • marble-effect castings;
  • thin coloured surface layers;
  • cement-based decorative paints;
  • modelling and casting projects.

The 5% dosage recommendation applies to cement-containing compounds. When using the pigment with gypsum or other non-cementitious materials, follow the instructions for the specific material and carry out a small test first.

Good to Know

Wet concrete normally appears darker than fully dried concrete, so assess the final colour only once the casting has dried.

For consistent colour between batches, keep the cement or casting compound, pigment percentage, water ratio, mixing procedure and curing conditions as consistent as possible.
