SS4 is an acidic, gel-like and colourless etching agent designed for roughening hardened concrete surfaces and creating decorative textures. It removes the thin, smooth cement-rich casting skin and exposes fine sand and aggregate particles underneath.

SS4 is particularly suitable for creating an artificial sandstone, matt or naturally weathered concrete effect. The manufacturer particularly recommends fine-grain STEINGUSS casting mortar for this technique.

How to Use

1. Allow the concrete casting to harden and remove it from the mould.
2. Apply SS4 gel to the surface with a brush.
3. The acid begins to attack the cement-rich surface layer – slight fizzing and a strong odour may occur.
4. After a short contact time, brush off and rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
5. Repeat if a more pronounced texture is required.

Its gel consistency helps the product stay on the surface and reduces running and splashing compared with a free-flowing acid. However, this does not make the product harmless – it contains a strong acid.

Effects You Can Create

SS4 can be used to:

• remove the smooth casting skin;
• expose fine sand and aggregate particles;
• create an artificial sandstone effect;
• give concrete a more natural matt texture;
• reveal decorative particles or mica incorporated into the concrete.

Important Safety Information

SS4 contains a strong acid and is a hazardous product. The manufacturer's safety data sheet classifies it, among other hazards, as capable of causing severe skin burns and eye damage, with additional hazards associated with inhalation and ingestion.

Use only in a well-ventilated working area, wear appropriate protective gloves and eye / face protection, and follow all instructions on the product label and safety data sheet. The 500 ml bottle has a child-resistant closure.
